Since its founding in Atlanta some 60 years ago, the restaurant has been elevated to cultural touchstone, now sprawling across 25 U.S. states with more than 2,000 locations. Set a nonstick skillet on medium heat and once hot, spray with avocado oil. Toss in the spinach, and if needed, add 1-2 tablespoons of water to the skillet to create steam to wilt the spinach. Cook on each side for 4 -6 minutes, or until the edges are golden  and crispy.

The garden salad doesn't contain any of the eight most common allergens, and it only contains 35 calories, 0 g fat, 0 g saturated fat, 7 g carbs, 5 g sugar, 2 g protein, and 20 mg sodium. If a garden salad won't fill you up, ordering a side of sliced tomatoes and a side sausage can create a heartier meal. With 34 grams of protein, this chicken biscuit is a relatively low-fat option as this chicken is grilled instead of fried, and it clocks in under 550 calories which is rare on the Waffle House menu. Additionally, this chicken biscuit only has 1 grams of sugar as opposed to the more chocolatey, sugar-doused offerings that could leave you feeling groggy after your first, and most important, meal of the day. The grilled chicken salad is still a healthy option and even adds extra healthy protein to your meal, although this option comes with a hefty amount of cholesterol and sodium. The salad provides 175 calories, 2.5 g fat, 0.5 g saturated fat, 8 g carbs, 31 g protein, 5 g sugar, and 950 mg sodium. To better control the contents of your hashbrown bowl, consider customizing it using the build-your-own hashbrown bowl option.

Navigating the Menu

The restaurant is basically embedded in the American south with its reputation for friendly service and southern hospitality, but talks of the menu have ventured far beyond the Mason-Dixon line. If you've ever visited a Waffle House location, you probably know why — it's all in the hash browns. While the chicken option may seem more nutritious, it is in fact higher in calories and sodium than the cheesesteak. The cheesesteak melt hashbrown bowl comes out to 625 calories, 29 g fat, 13 g saturated fat, 63 g carbohydrates, 16 g protein, and 1,290 mg sodium. All egg breakfasts come with your choice of toast (white, wheat, or raisin) and a side (grits, hashbrowns, or sliced tomatoes).

✗ Double "Original" Angus Cheeseburger

One grilled biscuit contains 380 calories, 25 g fat, 14 g saturated fat, 34 g carbs, 1 g sugar, 5 g protein, and 900 mg sodium. If you must add a condiment to the biscuit, consider skipping the butter and jam and opting for a little honey. The biscuit and sausage gravy side has 470 calories, 30 g fat, 16 g saturated fat, 44g carbs, 3 g sugar, 6 g protein, and 1,810 mg sodium, which makes it more like an entree than a simple side in terms of calories. If you want a side are craving biscuit and gravy flavors, you may be better off ordering a grilled biscuit and a side of sausage. An order of the regular hashbrowns features grated potatoes fried until golden. One serving comes out to 190 calories, 7 g fat, 2.5 g saturated fat, 29 g carbohydrates, 3 g protein, and 240 mg sodium.

Diet-Specific Options

This hamburger competes with the nutritional value of other fast-food burgers, but you do get a nice sit-down environment at Waffle House. The egg sandwich has 220 calories, 8.5 g fat, 2 g saturated fat, 27 g carbs, 4 g sugar, 10 g protein, and 320 mg sodium. If you want a grab-and-go option at the Waffle House, the breakfast sandwiches and melts work well. People with food allergies, however, should skip these sandwiches, as they contain wheat, egg, and soy. You can order the sliced tomatoes as a side, and get a strong dose of vitamin A and C at the same time.

Plus, pork consumers have higher intakes of many micronutrient nutrients compared to nonpork eaters, according to data published in the journal Nutrients. In one skillet, heat butter while you whisk together the eggs (1-2 per person) and add salt and pepper. Worst: Peanut Butter Chip Waffle

The double "Original" Angus cheeseburger contains 625 calories, 46 g fat, 18.5 g saturated fat, 30 g carbs, 5 g sugar, 21 g protein, and 800 mg sodium. If you must have meat, but want to reduce calories, stick with the single original and skip the cheese. You can find protein-based traditional dinners on the menu that come complete with greens and a carb side. You can choose from a classic waffle or order a waffle with different toppings, such as pecans, chocolate chips, and peanut butter chips.

With over 20 years in the culinary world, she is able to effectively deliver a bounty of knowledge, with a side of sarcastic wit. In 2012 I started a Tumblr blog called “FitMenCook” to share my meals online in order to build a community around healthy food ideas, as well as to keep myself accountable and motivated. Divide the hashbrown mix into 2 equally sized portions, then divide the halves into your desired portions to make small patties (I made about 6 equally sized patties and used an egg ring to help shape them). Anyone with severe food allergies might want to avoid Waffle House, as the restaurant can't guarantee that its cooking environment is free from any specific allergen. People with strict food allergies should be aware of any cross-contamination. To stay low in calories when ordering waffles, avoid the syrup and toppings, and stick to a small pat of butter or jam.

You can also mix these up by using a different kind of meat like bacon or chorizo. Or you could use a different kind of cheese, or even add in some other toppings like onions or mushrooms. Enjoy your favorite breakfast spuds — scattered, smothered, covered, and chunked — in the comfort of your own kitchen with our copycat version of Waffle House's iconic hash browns. Slinging humble breakfast fare around the clock, Waffle House inspires deep and unyielding loyalty in diners like few restaurant chains (except maybe Whataburger) can. Those illustrious hash browns that somehow taste better when you’re intoxicated? Likely some combination of all of the above, plus a little bit of that inexplicable Southern diner magic — call it the Waffle House je ne sais quoi.

They’re basically all the best foods of Waffle House in one thing—hashbrowns, cheese, eggs, and sausage. This complete breakfast features scrambled eggs, cheese, and sausage over the restaurant’s famous hash browns and is a wonderful way to start the day. While the cheesesteak is not the most nutritious protein, the Texas cheesesteak melt comes out to the most nutritious option in this category—even more so than the Texas grilled chicken melt.

Build-your-own meals at Waffle House offer some of the healthier options as you can avoid fattier meats and gargantuan portions while also adding some nutritional value to your plate. If you're in the mood for a breakfast sandwich, we recommend opting for wheat toast over thick, sugar-laden Texas toast and choosing the "city ham" over fattier cuts such as sausage or even country ham. Additionally, an egg will add a dash of choline which is crucial for proper metabolism function while cheese provides nutrients such as calcium.

Best: Build Your-Own Chicken and Veggie Omelet with Tomatoes and Wheat Toast

But if you only consider the three sizes and eight “scattered” hash brown styles above, you might conclude there are actually 768 different combinations available. They may not be Georgia-based Waffle House’s signature or most profitable menu item, but true fans of the franchise will tell you those hash browns in all their crispy glory are not to be overlooked. Waffle House is an enjoyable place to eat when craving breakfast foods and a lively environment when dining out with friends and family. With the amount of egg and dairy on the menu, you will find following a vegan diet almost impossible at the Waffle House (with the exception of the two salad options). As one of the most popular items after waffles, grilled biscuits are ordered more often than toast in a number of Waffle House locations.

Nutrition

With its staple menu item in its name, Waffle House offers an abundance of—you guessed it—waffles. But you will find other entrees and sides on the menu, ranging from beloved breakfast choices to hamburgers to garden salads. The ubiquitous Waffle House—home of Sunday brunches, late-night eats, and family gatherings around stacks of breakfast foods—is a popular American restaurant. Set up reminiscent of a diner, this establishment remains an icon in the country for its famous waffles and popular carb-loaded entrees for all-day breakfast. According to Eater, if you order your hash browns "scattered" it means they will be grilled spread out instead of in the usual metal ring.

They only select potatoes grown by multi-generational, family farmers located in the world’s most famous potato growing regions of southeast Idaho. This area is known for rich volcanic soil, pure mountain water and the perfect climate, resulting in superior and fresh potatoes. Life-long farmer Dick Watt is one of the many farmers who harvest the russet potatoes at the peak of the season to ensure the perfect taste and texture. Some say “Po-tay-to.” Others say “Po-tah-to.” We simply say “Scattered, Smothered & Covered®”. And if we didn’t use quality potatoes in our world-famous hashbrowns, these three words would not be synonymous with Waffle House restaurants. You can combine any of those to your liking, and even order your hash browns “all the way” with all eight of the above toppings.

Worst: Cheesesteak Omelet with Hashbrowns and a Biscuit

I have the eggs, sausage, and hashbrowns going at the same time, but I’m laying out the recipe with you cooking one thing at a time. Because Waffle House is named after its most popular food, you will not be surprised that the majority of menu items contain a high number of carbs, calories, and sugar. Anyone watching their carb intake, staying away from gluten, or avoiding added sugar will struggle to find menu items to eat. While high in healthy proteins, the large chocolate milk is also high in sugar, calories, and sodium. One serving provides 440 calories, 16 g fat, 10 g saturated fat, 58 g carbohydrates, 16 g protein, and 360 mg sodium. Order the regular chocolate milk for a smaller portion, or consider ordering the regular milk instead.

The healthiest choices are wheat toast, sliced tomatoes, and kid's-size bacon, which add another 320 calories, 20 g fat, 7.5 g saturated fat, 24 g carbohydrate, 4 g sugar, 14 g protein, and 680 mg sodium. The chicken dinner contains 565 calories, 21.5 g fat, 7.5 g saturated fat, 56 g carbs, 7 g sugar, 37 g protein, and 1,490 mg sodium. The dinner includes a garden salad, hashbrowns, grilled chicken, and Texas toast. If you want toast, consider asking to substitute the Texas toast for wheat toast, which is a more nutritious option.

There's a common theme among Waffle House's Texas toast options—they're not the most nutritious choice. At 775 calories without a side, well over the AHA's recommended daily sodium count, and a whopping 23 grams of saturated fat, this melt is not a great choice at any time of day. If you do order this meal, we recommend eating with a side of tomatoes and adding veggies such as lettuce, tomato, mushrooms, and peppers. It can be hard to find an omelet that really ticks all of the health boxes, especially as nearly all of Waffle House's options are very high in sodium and saturated fat. However, your best bet is to build your own omelet with chicken and veggies such as grilled onions, grilled tomatoes, grilled mushrooms, and  Jalapeno peppers.

Classic waffles don't include any toppings; all other Waffle House waffle menu choices do. If you use just a little syrup and butter (or avoid them altogether), you can keep the calorie count relatively low. One order of plain classic waffles contains 410 calories, 18 g fat, 10 g saturated fat, 55 g carbs, 15 g sugar, 8 g protein, and 870 mg sodium. Unsurprisingly, Waffle House's "classic waffle" is the healthiest waffle choice of them all as it doesn't come with any chocolate or peanut butter chips on top. What is surprising is that this option has 8 grams of protein, so this waffle (especially if you don't drench it in syrup) may actually leave you feeling satisfied. Unfortunately, Waffle House doesn't offer any fruit choices to put on top of your waffle, so we recommend adding an egg on the side for some added nutrients such as choline and Vitamin A.

The tomatoes contain 10 calories, 0 g fat, 0 g saturated fat, 2 g carbs, 1 g sugar, 1 g protein, and 0 mg sodium. Waffle House's Peanut Butter Chip Waffle clocks in as the worst waffle option as it contains a whopping 965 milligrams of sodium, 17 grams of saturated fat, and 31 grams of sugar. Overconsumption of added sugars—of which this waffle is choked full—directly contributes to various health issues including obesity, coronary heart disease (especially in women), and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. We recommend that you splurge on this waffle in moderation and maybe forgo the syrup, for the sake of your health.

Alongside its breakfast hashbrown bowls, Waffle House offers hashbrowns sides, which come served regular, scattered, smothered, or covered. Customize your hashbrowns and eliminate the high-sodium and high-calorie toppings such as the chili, gravy, ham, and cheese to enjoy the potatoes with better nutrition. "One of the best choices is the 2-Egg Breakfast with wheat toast and sliced tomatoes," says Melissa Mitri, MS, RD, Nutrition Writer and Weight Loss Expert, owner of Melissa Mitri Nutrition. A popular American diner chain, Waffle House attracts customers for their combo-style meals and affordable prices.

"This breakfast side provides 5 grams of fiber which is a great addition to start the day," she continues. Non-allergen items are protein-based, such as bacon, sausage, and grilled chicken. The best entrée option for anyone with a food allergy is the garden salad, which doesn't include milk products. The meat lovers pork chop dinner has 1,295 calories, 64 g fat, 22 g saturated fat, 55 g carbs, 7 g sugar, 122 g protein, and 2,150 mg sodium.

Yemeni Cafe Delah Coffee Is Set to Open a Second Location in Uptown Oakland Eater SF

An artful mural serves as a tribute to the coffee’s origin, commemorating the labor of farmers who carefully plucked the beans. The mini pancakes are served with Nutella, pistachio, and biscoff cookie drizzles, and crumbled pistachios are placed atop for the perfect crunch. Two sisters who grew up roasting coffee beans for their grandmother launched this Yemeni American brunch cafe. Murals that adorn the walls were created to pay homage to the memory of those moments, while the menu offers ashta pistachio pancakes, shakshuka, and laham sigar along with pots of Mofawar coffee prepared with cream and cardamom.

They also serve gourmet breakfast toast, such as the Mediterranean Toast which is topped with hummus, peppers, and feta cheese and the Lebna and Zaatar Toast, a mix of cultures the owners grew up with in Dearborn. On a Thursday night in November, the Delah location in downtown Oakland was full of customers. Some were sipping their drinks and chatting, some tapped on their laptops and others were reading or watching something on their smartphones. Hamza Ghalid, the owner of Mohka House, says there is a simple reason for the success of Yemeni coffee shops and their recent proliferation. Our mission is to provide sustainably sourced, hand-picked, micro-roasted quality coffee. At Dellah Coffee & Brunch House, their core values are hospitality, culture, and community.

The beans are grown at high altitudes and are 60% smaller than average coffee beans. Ghalid said that different regions of Yemen each have their own way of harvesting and drying the beans. After Lotfi’s first visit, he continued to return, eventually getting to know the coffee house’s co-founder, Omar Jahamee. Jahamee opened Delah with his uncle, Majed Jahamee, when he was just 18 years old. They also have all kinds of espresso coffees and lattes, both served hot or iced. Then they have the popular Adeni Chai and traditional Yemeni tea with mint for their customers to have a light and refreshing drink to go with their meal. In addition to crowd-pleasers like the Yemeni Latte and Bee Bites (cream cheese-stuffed bread, served hot, with honey on top), the new location will feature a few signature items. The Dubai Refresher is a lighter drink full of lemon, lime, mint, and sparkling water, whereas the saffron latte will invoke some of the aromatic drinks Delah is already well-known for in SoMa. This restaurant and patisserie from the team behind Brome Modern Eatery and Canelle in Detroit s the ideal spot for both pastry lovers and those looking to enjoy brunch.

In addition to the drinks, the Yemeni coffee shops are also set apart by their interior design and late hours. Lotfi says that Delah, with the couches up against the wall and a quiet atmosphere, is reminiscent of traditional coffeehouses in Iran and across the SWANA region, a fusion of modern and traditional. Our menu features a carefully curated selection of coffee blends, each made with sustainably sourced beans and roasted to perfection. From our classic drip coffee to our handcrafted espresso drinks, each cup is made with care and attention to detail. Within the ATA Plaza lies Azal Coffee, a Yemeni coffee shop renowned for its offerings of blue tea, blue lattes, mocktails, and cherished classics such as Adeni chai. Don’t miss the signature brown sugar shakes espresso, which strikes a balance between the strength of the espresso and subtle sweetness. Another option in the growing Yemeni coffee scene, Shibam serves tasty espresso drinks like its Shibam latte, iced or hot, with bold earthy and dried fruit notes from the espresso and a unique balance of Yemeni spices. Three buttery pastry offerings are served alongside the espresso-based coffee options, and single and kettle servings of Yemeni coffee roasts and Yemeni black tea with a few different herbal combinations. Haraz Coffee House is the Dearborn-based Yemeni coffee chain that continues to make its mark throughout the region and beyond. Named after the ancient villages of the Haraz Mountains in Yemen’s lower west coast region, the menu consists of espresso drinks, Turkish tea, smoothies, saffron cakes, sabayah — thinly layered bread drizzled with honey — and other sweet treats.

This whimsically modern patisserie is home to dozens of elegant and rich Parisian desserts like eclairs, macarons, croissants, cakes, and the halawah and cardamom latte — with a flavor reminiscent of baklava. The outdoor patio is a summer staple in Dearborn, where guests can enjoy sweet treats paired with a coffee variety that originated in Spain — the miel latte, made up of a shot of espresso, steamed milk, and honey. The Yemeni latte is made with a double shot of espresso and has cinnamon and cardamom, while the adeni chai uses premium Yemen black tea boiled with cream, cinnamon, cardamom, cloves and nutmeg. Dellah also serves several traditional Yemeni brewed coffee blends using fine grounds of coffee and spices such as the mofawer, rada’ey, sanaani, jubani, qishr, turkish, and the Arabian qahwa which they call “Queen Arwa’s coffee”.

“Students especially, they don’t want to be stuck at home 24/7 studying,” Jahamee said. “So, it’s always a good thing when they have a spot to go to.” He added that sometimes the Berkeley location sees customers staying until close, and he loves to see people using the space. Predating this year’s wave of Yemeni cafes, Mellana Cafe opened in 2019 in the Longfellow neighborhood of Oakland and also sells a selection of Yemeni-style caffeinated beverages. We believe that coffee is more than just a drink – it’s a social experience that brings people together.

Guests can also select a variety snacks like honeycomb bread and sabaya — layered honey cake. From savory Yemeni dishes to beloved American brunch staples, every bite at Dellah tells a story of culture and creativity. Whether you’re a local looking for a new favorite spot or a visitor eager to experience the vibrant flavors of Dearborn, Dellah welcomes you with open arms. The new location, which is set to open in mid-December or by the end of the year, was vacated by the union-busting coffee chain when the franchise moved into a bigger space across the street. Delah Coffee House was the first Bay Area cafe to highlight coffee’s geographical origins in both the design of the shop and its menu.

Galata Sweets makes a delicious frothy version called kahvesi that can also be ordered with pistachios. “I think it’s a great idea to have it open later because there’s not a lot of places within the Bay that you can go out and do things late at night that are just kind of like chill, laidback, relaxing,” Lotfi said. “Like a lot of Iranian flavors, for example, there’s a lot of tartness and sourness to [the hibiscus], so whenever I order it, it feels like home,” he said. Dellah Coffee & Brunch House also plans to launch a new culturally interactive placemat where kids will get a chance to learn more about the Yemeni culture and encourage and initiate conversations while waiting for their food. When you walk into Dellah Coffee & Brunch House you get the smell of traditional Yemeni coffee’s and teas while Arabic music is playing harmoniously in the background. “I wanted people to sort of experience the environment there, without being able to go there,” Ghalid said.

Guests can relax in traditional Arab seating, family-friendly lounge areas, and private soundproof rooms, all easily reserved through an app. Additionally, the app offers pre-ordering services, ideal for managing high volumes seamlessly. The Biscoff and caramel milk cakes pair with the range of classic Yemeni coffees, teas, refreshers, and popular lattes.

Buttery croissants, rich eclairs, and colorful macarons accompany coffee classics like Americano, cortado, and breve — equal parts espresso and half-and-half, a rich and creamy combination. The decadent coffee bar also adds a unique twist by adding a “float” of espresso on top of layered half-and-half and sweetened coffee and is meant to be thrown back like a shot. Gathering together for a cup of coffee is a centuries-old ritual with origins in the Arabian Peninsula and the Horn of Africa. The first cups of the electrifying beverage were served hundreds of years ago in Yemen. Omar Jahamee, the owner of SoMa’s Delah Coffee House, has confirmed plans to open a second location of his Yemeni-style coffee house in the Bay Area. This time, the business will take over a former Starbucks at 420 West Grand Avenue in Oakland, right off Broadway.

The hope in this location is to offer more family-friendly seating, like the traditional Yemeni sofas Jahamee says are common in cafes back home. The decor will also be a bit more upgraded, not that the coffee maps and delah pots in the first location are anything to scoff at. As the young business keeps growing, Jahamee hopes its fan base continues to swell and that more and more locations can sprout up throughout the Bay Area and the state.

Dellah Coffee & Brunch House will serve as a comfortable space for all, local residents and more, knowing that it is a gathering place where all are welcomed and celebrated. At the front counter you can see a picture of a Dellah, which is the Arabic word for coffee pot. In the Yemeni Culture a Dellah symbolizes hospitality, which is what inspired the owners to come up with the name for their restaurant. In these complicated times, nothing cuts through the stress of life and replenishes the spirit quite like a coffee break. That's the beauty of Xerjoff's Coffee Break collection, inspired by the intriguing and centuries-long history of the international coffee trade.

“Portrait of Estelle Musson Degas” is the only one of Degas’ 18 New Orleans paintings still in the city. It is part of the New Orleans Museum of Art’s permanent collection, purchased for $200,000 in the mid-1960s with money raised in part by bake sales. In the late 1800s Edgar Degas was one of the leading artists of the French Impressionist movement. However, his full talent in that genre didn't truly emerge until he spent a year with members of his family in New Orleans from 1872 to 1873. Bronze castings made from his original wax figure in the early 20th century are extremely valuable. But the statue acquired by the Degas House is of recent vintage, cast at a foundry in Europe and purchased through an art dealer.

Artistic career

During the time the renowned artist stayed with them he created 18 paintings and 4 drawings depicting his New Orleans family members while developing the painting skills that forever secured his stature in the Impressionist School. This house is the only known home or studio of Degas that is open to the public. By 1868, Degas had become a prominent member of a group of avant-garde artists including Manet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Claude Monet and Alfred Sisley, who gathered frequently at the Café Guerbois to discuss ways in which artists could engage the modern world. Their meetings coincided with tumultuous times in the history of France.

With the country deeply divided between those in support of Dreyfus and those against him, Degas sided with those whose anti-Semitism blinded them to Dreyfus's innocence. His stance against Dreyfus cost him many friends and much respect within the typically more tolerant avant-garde art circles. A century after his death, the Edgar Degas House operates a thriving business as a bed-and-breakfast and reception hall for weddings. The museum offers tours and events, which you can book online as well.

While Degas's paintings are not overtly political, they do reflect France's changing social and economic environment. His paintings portray the growth of the bourgeoisie, the emergence of a service economy and the widespread entrance of women into the workplace. In 1855, Degas gained admission into the École des Beaux-Arts (formerly the Académie des Beaux-Arts) in Paris. However, after only one year of study, Degas left school to spend three years traveling, painting and studying in Italy. He painted painstaking copies of the works of the great Italian renaissance painters Michelangelo and da Vinci, developing a reverence for classical linearity that remained a distinguishing feature of even his most modern paintings. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is distinguished by the French Ministry of Culture.

Seven days a week, Prados and Moyer lead twice-daily tours of the Degas House property. The ground-floor room along Tonti Street where Degas painted features a reproduction of his studio. Built during the original development of the Esplanade Ridge Neighborhood, the Degas House dates from the early 1850s. During these years, directly prior to the Civil War, the South experienced a boom in both wealth and population.

It is the only home or studio of Degas anywhere in the world that is open to the public, beautifully restored and located on majestic Esplanade Avenue just eleven blocks from the famous New Orleans French quarter. The 18 works he created in New Orleans included portraits of several relatives. His uncle and two brothers are depicted in “A Cotton Office in New Orleans,” which became the first of his paintings to be purchased by a museum. Today, both halves of the house have been reunited under the ownership of Degas’s relatives and Musson descendants.

A major restoration was performed on the main house, which now serves as a bed and breakfast, while the other portion, which contained Degas’s studio and bedroom, has been restored to the way it would have looked during his visit. Degas lived well into the 20th century, and though he painted less during these years, he promoted his work tirelessly and became an avid art collector. He never married, though he did count several women, including American painter Mary Cassatt, among his intimate friends. A portrait of famed artist Edgar Degas, left, appears to look at a bronze reproduction of  his most famous sculpture, "Little Dancer of Fourteen Years," outside the Degas House in New Orleans on Tuesday, September 27, 2017.

Early Life

In 1853, at the age of 18, he received permission to "copy" at the Louvre in Paris. (During the 19th century, aspiring artists developed their technique by attempting to replicate the works of the masters.) He produced several impressive copies of Raphael as well, studying the work of more contemporary painters such as Ingres and Delacroix. Degas returned to Paris in 1873 and his father died the following year, whereupon Degas learned that his brother René had amassed enormous business debts.

Returning to Paris near the end of 1873, Degas, along with Monet, Sisley and several other painters, formed the Société Anonyme des Artistes (Society of Independent Artists), a group committed to putting on exhibitions free of the Salon's control. The group of painters would come to be known as the Impressionists (though Degas preferred the term "realist" to describe his own work), and on April 15, 1874, they held the first Impressionist exhibition. The paintings Degas exhibited were modern portraits of modern women — milliners, laundresses and ballet dancers — painted from radical perspectives. Upon returning to Paris in 1859, Degas set out to make a name for himself as a painter. It had very rigid and conventional ideas of beauty and proper artistic form and received Degas's paintings with measured indifference. Located near City Park among many other stately mansions along Esplanade Avenue, the recently restored Degas House was the home of Degas' maternal relatives, the Musson family, prominent cotton brokers in New Orleans.

If you have comments or questions about this object record, please complete and submit this form. Period furnishings are on display inside the house, re-creating the ambience of Degas' times. Degas’ time in New Orleans was brief but critical to his artistic development. In a letter written from New Orleans in February 1873, he expressed his desire to create art that would be “less complicated and more spontaneous.” That intent resulted in his emergence at the vanguard of the Impressionist movement. In 1872, he settled in at his uncle's rambling mansion at Esplanade Avenue and Tonti Street. During a sojourn of several months in the city, he produced 18 paintings and solidified New Orleans’ claim on yet another creative soul.

In July 1870, the Franco-Prussian War broke out and the highly nationalistic Degas volunteered for the French National Guard. At the war's conclusion in 1871, the infamous Paris Commune seized control of the capital for two terrifying months before Adolphe Thiers reestablished the Third Republic in a bloody civil war. Degas largely avoided the tumult of the Paris Commune by taking an extended trip to visit relatives in New Orleans. During his visit with his family, Degas produced 22 paintings, including “A Cotton Office in New Orleans,” which depicted the work of his uncle Michael Musson and was the first of his paintings (and the first by any Impressionist) to be purchased by a museum.

In the mid-1890s, an episode known as the "Dreyfus Affair" sharply divided French society. In 1894, Alfred Dreyfus, a young Jewish captain in the French military, was convicted of treason on spying charges. Although evidence that proved Dreyfus's innocence surfaced in 1896, rampant anti-Semitism kept him from being exonerated for another 10 years.

It would be a superfluous and thankless task to argue with critics or artists who refuse to acknowledge Manet, Monet, Degas. Degas chose his models among the washerwomen and ballet-girls of modern Paris, Rossetti borrowing his subjects from Dante. You will have to start a new application if you wish to participate in the program. Despite the administration’s criticism of violent college protests and Biden’s refusal to heed demands to cut off U.S. support for Israel, Republicans blame Democrats for the disorder and have used it as a backdrop for press conferences. The White House, which has been peppered with questions by reporters, had gone only slightly further than the president.

'Violent protest is not protected,' Biden says of college campus unrest

"For rubber bullets, who wants a shield?" a protester called out. Some protesters said Muslim prayers as the sun set over the campus, while others chanted "we’re not leaving" or passed out goggles and surgical masks. They wore helmets and headscarves, and discussed the best ways to handle pepper spray or tear gas as someone sang over a megaphone. As police helicopters hovered overhead on Thursday morning, the sound of flash-bangs, which produced a bright light and a loud noise to disorient and stun people, could be heard as police moved in. Outside, they often had waitresses and menus, and the selection was obviously limited by the size of their tiny kitchens. Basically, it was burgers, dogs and a few sandwiches and salads, and I think some of them also served breakfast.

UCLA Pro-Palestine protesters now in a standoff with police. This comes as multiple brawls broke out and firecrackers exploded at a UCLA protest, all happening right outside of the pro-Palestine encampments in the Westwood part of the campus. This all a part of campus wide protests across the nation, including colleges like Columbia, USF, George Washington University, USC among others. The fight broke out shortly after Pro-Israel protesters started to play music outside the pro-Palestine encampments. Tensions on college campuses have been building for days as demonstrators refuse to remove encampments and administrators turn to police to clear them by force, leading to clashes that have seized widespread attention.

Some protesters were seen trying to resist, shining bright flashlights in the eyes of officers. Others remained steadfast and formed a line with their arms linked, facing off with an equally long line of officers. Z told Mothership on Apr. 25 that the owners had set up umbrellas to cover the dog. SPCA noted that while the dog was "elderly and in poor health", the owner had sought veterinary care, was duly administering medicine, and "remains committed to seeing the dog through the rest of his life". Z shared that the dog was kept within a playpen on the property, but was not brought indoors.

LAFD said 14 of those transported to the hospital were on the train at the time of the crash, while two people were aboard the USC bus. Firefighters and paramedics evaluated and treated at least 55 people as a result of the crash, LAFD said in an update Tuesday afternoon. The crash occurred on Watt Way and Exposition Boulevard in the Exposition Park neighborhood around noon, local time, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD).

The brothers’ house was destroyed, and most of their belongings are gone. They told CNN the basement they would have sheltered in collapsed and was crushed by a tree. By the time Roger Slatten pulled into the driveway and ran inside, it was too late to find shelter. The brothers say they locked eyes before a tornado with winds of at least 136 miles per hour ripped them from the house. "Suicide affects everyone. It doesn't matter your age, race or gender," Emhoff said. "One hundred and thirty-two people die by suicide each and every day."

Johnson visited Columbia University with other members of his caucus last week. House Republicans sparred verbally with protesters while speaking to the media at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday. His career in elected office began as a county official when he was only 28 years old, and he’s always espoused the political importance of compromise. The protesters alleged that their aggressors were armed with pepper spray, gas canisters and bricks — which may explain the group’s request for shields and gas masks.

The brothers said Max was in “doggy ICU” for a couple of days. She commends the new White House strategy, but says access to health care is still a huge barrier to overcome for many folks seeking mental health treatment. The White House has also maintained its focus on combating antisemitism. Doug Emhoff, husband of Vice President Kamala Harris, spoke to Jewish students and Hillel leaders on Thursday to hear about their experience with threats and hate speech, according to a White House official. But Biden’s team has expressed confidence that his stance appeals to the widest array of voters.

Kate Berner, who served as deputy communications director for Biden’s campaign in 2020, said Republicans already had tried the same tactic during protests over Floyd’s murder. A separate spreadsheet made specifically for donors interested in feeding the rabble-rousers was linked in the document — and came with a clear warning that several items were not permitted in the encampment. Skater helmets, shields, wood for barriers and elbow and knee pads were among the much-needed tools requested by the school’s Students for Justice in Palestine to sustain its so-called UCLA Palestine Solidarity Encampment. ’ But then we heard about some other events going on down the road, so it’s random.

Unlike a traditional bar that happens to be dog friendly, The Dog House follows a membership model, which Chodlya and Robinson said ensures the safety of all patrons. All dog owners must fill out a brief online application, which includes veterinarian and vaccination information, and pay a small fee of $5 for a day pass, $10 for a month pass or $100 for a year pass. Applications are typically processed within 30 days of the date the State Bar receives a complete and accurate application. If you fail to complete the application, submit all required documentation, or pay the required fee within 60 days of submission of the application, your RIHC Application will be deemed abandoned without a refund of fees paid.

SJP at UCLA claimed they experienced a “life-threatening assault” after counter-protesters tried to clear the camp overnight in what turned into a chaotic brawl that required intervention from LAPD officers. Classes at UCLA were canceled on Wednesday after counterprotesters attacked the pro-Palestine encampment on campus. Police began to move in on pro-Palestine protesters around 3 a.m.
