Valley News Art Notes: Lebanon Opera House, Chandler Music Hall reopen following renovations

There are three designated smoking areas a short walk from the doors of LOH, including one across the street at the northeast corner of Colburn Park. Lebanon Opera House strives to provide access to all events and programs to everyone regardless of age, ability, gender, sexual orientation, or economic standing. LOH endeavors to identify barriers to this goal and make improvements to ensure our venue can be accessed by all. There is plenty of free parking on nearby streets and in the large public lots behind the theater. Make a left from the exit ramp and follow Rt. 4 a few miles into downtown Lebanon. This famed "pop music in a time machine" ensemble reimagines modern earworms in classic genres like 1920s jazz, swing, doo-wop, and Motown.

Lebanon Opera House is reopening next week with a new look after five months of renovations — just in time for the performing arts center to celebrate its 100th year. The time on your ticket is when the show is scheduled to start. Of course, some artists are more punctual than others!

This entrance is unlocked one hour prior to performance time. The $3.4 million renovation builds upon the art deco aesthetic of the space, located on the second floor of Lebanon City Hall, just over the New Hampshire border. Upgrades include LED stage lighting, new dressing rooms, plywood subfloor and carpeting, roomier theater seats with cupholders, fresh paint, and custom chandeliers. The public can see the updated venue at a free housewarming party on Wednesday, February 7, complete with a cash bar, DJ and dancing. The opera house has raised about $3.8 million so far, according to Clifford.

The recent renovation was entirely funded by donors as part of a campaign to raise $4.2 million for the opera house in advance of its centennial. The refresh transforms the venue into a modern theater, Clifford said. New stage lighting brings the theater in line with industry standards, he explained, and attendees can sit more comfortably in wider seats with more legroom. The Opera House seats 803, including eight transfer seats with removable armrests and two spaces for wheelchairs. The orchestra level holds 582 and there are 221 seats in the balcony, with room for up to 20 to stand in the rear of the theater. Tickets are sometimes available through artists’ fan club sites as pre-sales or special VIP packages.

It is located in the front of the theater with accessible entry through the City Hall Main Entrance on the east side of the building. Like Lebanon Opera House, the Chandler did a big renovation and expansion for its centennial, in 2007. But that project didn’t include repainting the music hall, which hadn’t been done since the 1990s, said Chloe Powell, who’s celebrating her first year as Chandler’s executive director.

Through its many incarnations, the opera house has always served as a community gathering place, Clifford said. In its centennial year, Lebanon Opera House will welcome big names such as "RuPaul's Drag Race" Season 9 winner Sasha Velour (March 4). The opera house will also host a 100th birthday celebration in October. During high-energy, music performances, you are allowed to stand at your seat. You are also allowed to stand at the rear of the auditorium.

The residency includes workshops and performances with the Upper Valley Music Center. “It’s pretty amazing to see what the space looks like,” Joe Clifford, the opera house’s executive director, said in a phone interview. The opera house is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year and officials say the improvements will help keep the theater viable for the next century. Unless otherwise noted, shows at Lebanon Opera House are all ages. Children younger than two will be admitted free (sitting on a lap), otherwise, everyone must have a ticket.

"For a long time, we were trying to fit ourselves into the city hall building," Clifford said. "Now, we're making a space comfortable for our essential purposes, which is about welcoming people to the theater." Built in 1924, the historic space initially served as a vaudeville theater.

The open house will conclude with a dance party with DJ Sean. At this time, we are not intentionally searching bags. We do withhold the right to request a bag search if we suspect a patron is smoking or vaping in the venue, carrying food or alcohol, or has items intended to harm the audience. If you need access to any of these seats, or have other questions about our accessibility features, please contact the LOH Box Office. If you don’t receive the email check your spam or junk folder for the confirmation. Smoking and vaping are 100% prohibited and will not be tolerated.

Tickets to some performances may be returned to the box office at any time before a show as a tax-deductible donation to Lebanon Opera House. Powell and the Chandler’s board are working to put the organization on firmer footing. Over the past decade, the Chandler has had a half-dozen directors after the departure of longtime leader Becky McMeekin.

Lebanon Opera House reopens after renovations

The plan to repair the music hall’s plasterwork, repaint it and carry out other repairs, including a replacement of the stage floor, was underway before she took the Chandler job. All told, the work is expected to cost around $175,000, all of it coming from grants and donations, including funding from the Vermont Arts Council and the Vermont Preservation Trust. The construction work was budgeted at $3.1 million and is on time and within budget, Clifford said. The nonprofit that leases the opera house from the city of Lebanon is raising all of the construction funding through private grants and donations. About $3.8 million of the $4.2 million goal has been raised so far, Clifford said. The remaining money left to raise will pay for sound equipment the opera house can use for community events around the city.

Local non-profit organizations often sell light snacks/desserts and non-alcoholic beverages in the lobby before a show and during intermission. Food or drink (except water) are not allowed in the theater so all refreshments must be consumed in the lobby. Because LOH is located in a municipal building, no alcohol is allowed on the premises. If you bring your ID to box office, we can almost always re-print your tickets. When possible, the inclusion of an opening act will be announced ahead of time, however artists will sometimes bring a surprise opener with them.

For young children, please be aware that many events at LOH are loud (85dBA+); feel free to bring protective headphones for your child or use your hands to cover their ears. Certain shows may have age restrictions but that will be evident on the event sales page online. This private, single-stall restroom is available for use by anyone. Find it on Level 1 where the City of Lebanon meeting rooms are located. The opera house is the same, in most respects, as it was when it opened in 1924, but the renovation will make it seem “new and fresh” to patrons, Clifford said. The upgrades include new seats and lighting, marking the opera house's 100th anniversary.

Biking from the South is possible for advanced cyclists via Rt. 120. Doors usually open 30 minutes before show time and we recommend arriving in Lebanon at least 45 minutes before the start of a show. For most shows, late patrons will wait outside the theater with an usher before being escorted into the theater during a suitable pause. This allows us to minimize the disturbance to the artists and patrons.

Assistive listening devices help to amplify and clarify sound by cutting down or eliminating ambient noise.

Unless otherwise noted, prices for seniors are 65 and older and children are 17 and younger. On occasion, a show will have “student” pricing which includes any student currently enrolled in an educational institution, with a valid student ID. Children younger than two who will sit on a lap do not need a ticket. Two gender-specific restrooms (i.e. Men’s and Women’s) may be accessed from the LOH lobby.

The doors to the theater usually open 30 minutes before showtime. In the case of General Admission shows, be aware that there may be a line forming up to one hour before a show in the lobby. The box office is open from noon to 5pm Monday through Friday, and our lobby Box Office Station opens one hour before the scheduled show time. The Box Office Station is open through the first intermission, and we ask that purchases for other shows take place during that intermission. Additional accessible seating may be available upon request at the time of ticket purchase.

If you don’t see this when ordering then your purchase has not been completed. LOH does not allow flash photography as it can be distracting to other patrons. The individual artists often have their own policies, but many allow non-flash photography with personal use cameras and prohibit video recording. More restrictive photo policies will be posted and announced at the show.

The open house will conclude with a dance party with DJ Sean. At this time, we are not intentionally searching bags. The Vermont Mandolin Trio performs Saturday night at 7 at Seven Stars Arts Center in Sharon. Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door; children under 12 get in free. A pair of the most venerable and active Upper Valley performance venues, Lebanon Opera House and Randolph’s Chandler Music Hall, are reopening in the next week after renovations. The Lebanon Opera House will start hosting events right away, with plans to show a classic Charlie Chaplin film Thursday night before some live comedy and music this weekend.

Unlike Lebanon Opera House, with its larger community and donor base, the Chandler operates on thinner margins. In Powell, it has a new young director with local ties. Chandler’s reopening includes both a partnership with a community organization and a boundary-pushing classical performance. The partnership is with Vermont Public, which will hold an installment of its “Homegoings” series, hosted by Randolph native Myra Flynn, on Feb. 17. Clifford is particularly looking forward to an early-April residency by the String Queens, a string trio pushing the boundaries of classical music.

This celebrity enclave, established in 1990, is among the most popular places for homebuyers to consider if they are looking for an exclusive, guard-gated community with excellent jetliner and canyon views. In addition, the legislation establishes that payments from state-run disaster resiliency programs and payments from various federal emergency agricultural programs are not considered income for federal tax purposes. It also advises states to direct insurers to consider plan owners’ disaster mitigation efforts when setting premiums. The city recently poured $1.1 million in improvements to the former reservoir turned public recreation area, including trimming trees, renovating the boathouse, enhancing the kids’ play area, and removing a reported 35 tons of trash from the lake. Included in the renovation was the forced removal of over 200 people who were living in the park while experiencing homelessness, which was met with criticism from locals and advocates alike.

By incentivizing homeowners to mitigate disaster risks on their property, the legislation will help bring insurers back into the market and lower rates. “As insurers increasingly pull out of housing markets, California homeowners and business owners are struggling to find coverage,” said Thompson. “At the same time, the climate crisis is causing natural disasters to intensify, and families are increasingly relying on their insurers to help them rebuild. For example, those same families who relied on insurance to help rebuild their homes following the 2017 Tubbs Fire in Coffey Park are no longer able to get coverage. Were disaster to strike today, many families wouldn’t recover — and that’s unacceptable.

Takes a lot of pride in offering unique outdoor spaces and leisurely activities for locals and tourists alike--and at the top of that list is its stunning city parks. Shonda Rhimes has made her love of the neighborhood abundantly clear over the past couple decades, with a total of four Hancock Park homes at one point. Though it’s unknown if she still owns property there, she certainly did her part in restoring the properties during her time in the area. Most notable is the Italian-style space she restored with Michael Smith—the designer who worked on the White House during Obama’s tenure. The home had been left with confusingly mismatched styles after a midcentury remodel, which she wrote about for AD.

Is a sprawling metropolis with a wide range of eclectic neighborhoods and cultural attractions, so it’s no surprise that the best city parks are just as vast and extraordinary.
